Henley Eyot make their way to the start line
Henley finally managed to get two teams to a BDA event this year, although both were understrength given a few last minute cancellations through injury and illness.
The severe weather the day before also meant that there were problems with some teams attending and getting boats out of waterlogged fields. Luckily Henley had everything loaded on the trailer a few days beforehand. The weather was pretty mixed on the day with some sunshine but some heavy showers - more about that later !
The Dragons team were without their usual helm for this event (Allie - we missed you), so Mark came to the rescue (when his Eyot paddling duties would allow) together with a collection of pool helms (thanks for your help). The Dragons appeared to be up against an on-form BA Hurricanes team in most races!! The Dragons made it into the Minor Final in both 200m and 500m and came 8th overall in both events.
The Eyot team were up against considerable odds as they only had 14 paddlers and no less than 5 people at that first racing event! In spite of this a good time was had by all and our newbies put in a sterling effort! After a reasonable run in the 200m races, the 500m races started and the Eyot team had to warm up, load the boat and race in torrential rain. Having checked the results we found themselves in the Plate competition with a real chance of making the Major final and potential silverware!! This was just the impetus to get their best result of the day and they came in a clear 1st! After a very closely fought final - the team came in 4th but happy and exhausted.
