For many people, competing in a marathon is a lifelong ambition. That was certainly the case for Henley paddler Steve Siddell, but after successfully completing his first marathon only last October, it now appears he's hooked !
Earlier this month Steve flew over to the US to compete in the New York marathon - his third marathon event in 13 months - finishing in a new personal best time of 3:25:38 !
Asked about the race, Steve commented "I had a rough race plan in my head, based upon a few lessons I learned from racing in Dublin and London. I knew it was going to be a tougher course than I've previously experienced, but I was still keen to break the 3hrs 30min barrier. I'm thrilled to have beaten my previous personal best time".

And so what were some of the highlights of the race ?
- Crossing the start line to "New York, New York" playing - very appropriate.
- Running over the bottom deck of the Verrazano Narrows bridge - fantastic views of Manhattan.
- Coming off the ramp of Queensboro Bridge onto First Avenue at mile 16, to a crowds of supporters.
- Crossing the finish in Central Park to Queen's "Under Pressure" - very apt !
- The People of New York: They were so supportive of competitors. I got stopped many times after the race from locals congratulating me on racing and keen to chat.
So what next ? Well, rumour has it a race somewhere a little closer to home, followed by another marathon next Spring.
Watch this space.
